Superstorms, cyclones, hurricanes and other extreme weather episodes are never far from the horizon. Hurricane Ida swept through nine states last year, devastating Louisiana but also demonstrating by its persistent path, that the effects of extreme weather can be far-reaching and the flooding, catastrophic.

There are a number of actions that you can take to prepare for potential storms ahead, including:

  • having enough plywood to board up windows and garage doors (the “weakest link” in a housing structure)
  • creating an emergency plan that covers where to seek shelter, whether that shelter is pet-friendly, and where to meet after a storm
  • putting together a “storm supplies kit” that includes non-perishable foods, drinking water, medicines, pet food, and emergency clothing
  • follow the local news for weather tips and the latest reports
  • familiarize yourself with your evacuation routes
  • gather phone chargers, cell phones, laptops and other technology-related items for quick access
