Clean the Gutters

Get rid of all that fall foliage that might be stuck in your gutters. When vegetation builds up in your gutters, it can cause them to clog, eventually weighing them down and potentially detaching from your house. Clogged gutters that accumulate water can also create a breeding ground for mosquitos, possibly leading to rust if left alone.

Check for Leaks

After a long winter, it’s important to check your house for leaks, especially before the spring rains come. If there are any leaks on the outside of your home, water can seep in through cracks and into your walls or roof, causing structural damage and mold growth. Check your home for flaws like broken or warped siding and fix them as soon as possible. The same goes for inside your home by checking for dripping faucets, running toilets, and other appliances.

Create an Out-of-Power Kit

Excessive rain and storms can cause power outages. Create an Out-of-Power kit and include things like batteries, flashlights, a first aid kit, glowsticks, a deck of playing cards, a weather radio, and candles just to name a few items. If you do use candles, make sure everyone in your household knows where the fire extinguisher is. Keep this kit in a designated area in your home so that you know exactly where everything is when the power goes out.

Check Your Sealer

Check your sealer on areas outside of your home like a wooden deck, fencing, and brickwork that are prone to getting wet and have little airflow or sunlight to dry out. Applying a sealer like RainGuard can save your outdoor wood from rot, mold, and mildew. Pick a dry and sunny day to ensure proper curing to keep your outdoor structure dry during those April showers.

Improve Your Landscaping & Divert Water

If your yard tends to flood during the rainy season, it might be a good idea to grade your yard. By creating a slope in the ground, you can prevent water from collecting around your home’s foundation. Installing curtain drains, French drains, and gravel around your foundation can also divert water away from your home and into areas where it can easily drain.

Turn Off Sprinklers

If you have sprinklers or other irrigation in your garden, turn them off during storms and excessive rain to prevent flooding your yard and overwatering your plants.

Keep Yourself Dry

With April showers typically occurring throughout the month, this might be a good time to dust off those duck boots and keep a rain jacket on hand. Since we’re moving away from winter, you might even be able to find some good end-of-season deals on rainy-day apparel like rainboots, beanies, umbrellas, and jackets!

Even though sunny days are ahead of us, there is still the potential to weather a few storms and snow melts. A little effort can go a long way to help prevent any long-term damage to your home so that you can enjoy the upcoming warm weather without worrying about the rain.
