Check for Hidden Pool Leaks

Swimming pools are a great way to beat the heat, but they can also be a hidden source of water loss. If you’ve noticed an unexpected increase in your water bill, your pool may be worth investigating. 

While some water loss from evaporation is normal, especially during hot summer months, a leaking pool can waste hundreds or even thousands of gallons of water. An automatic fill valve may continuously replace that lost water, allowing the leak to go unnoticed. 

In warmer climates, many pools use the automatic fill valves to maintain a consistent water level, making it easier for leaks to go unnoticed. 

Here are a few simple ways to check for potential leaks.

  1. Inspect the Auto-Fill Valve

Many in-ground pools have an automatic fill valve that keeps the water at the proper level.

If the auto-fill is running more frequently than expected, it may be replacing water that’s escaping through a leak.

  1. Try the Bucket Test

The bucket test is an easy way to determine whether your pool is losing water beyond normal evaporation.

Here’s how:

  • Fill a bucket with pool water about three-quarters full.
  • Place the bucket on a pool step so the water inside the bucket is level with the pool water outside.
  • Mark the water level inside the bucket and the pool water level on the outside of the bucket.
  • Leave the bucket in place for about 24 hours without adding water to the pool or running the auto-fill system, if possible.
  • Compare the water levels.

If the pool water drops significantly more than the water inside the bucket, you may have a leak.

  1. Check Around Your Pool Equipment

Inspect your pump, filter, heater, and plumbing connections for dripping water, damp areas, or unusually wet soil. Small leaks around equipment can waste a surprising amount of water over time.

  1. Watch for Other Warning Signs

Your pool could have a leak if you notice:

  • Cracks around the pool or deck
  • Soggy or unusually green areas near the pool
  • Air bubbles coming from the return jets
  • Water level dropping faster than expected
