We recommend you take the following actions and protocols after inclement weather:
As power and water services are restored, please inspect internal plumbing by looking and listening for dripping water. Special attention should be paid to pipes in your house’s freezing points such as: crawl spaces, unheated rooms, basements, garages, and along exterior walls.
- If a leak is identified, shut off the water at the shut-off valve. The shut-off valve will be located where the water line enters the house.
- Drain the water from your pipes by opening the taps in your house.
- Contact your local licensed plumber to repair the pipe(s).
If you turn on a faucet and only a trickle comes out, your pipe(s) may be frozen.
- Shut off the water at the shut-off valve. DO NOT attempt to thaw frozen pipes unless the water is shut off.
- Apply heat to the frozen pipe by warming the air around it. (Heat can be applied using a heating pad, hair dryer, space heater, or hot water. Space heaters should not be left unattended. DO NOT use open flame or kerosene type heaters on pipes.)
- Once the pipe is thawed, water should be turned on slowly and the pipe(s) checked for leaks. Turn on all additional faucets to identify any additional frozen pipes – repeat defrost process as needed.
- Contact your local licensed plumber to repair the pipe(s) as needed.
If you notice water pooling in your yard, find your water meter to check if it’s running (make sure the taps in the house are off). Your water meter should be located near your property boundary and could be either an above-ground type or in-ground type of water meter.
If your water meter is running, contact our Customer Experience personnel and request a member of our operations team shut off your water at the water meter. DO NOT attempt to shut off your water service at your water meter on your own. We recommend that you do the following:
- Shut off the water in your house at the shut-off valve.
- Drain the water from your pipes by opening the taps in your house.
- Contact your local licensed plumber to repair the pipe(s).
- If your water meter is NOT running, contact our Customer Experience personnel and report a water main break.
After water outages and/or pipe repairs, you should follow boil advisory instructions, including:
- Boil water vigorously for three (3) minutes prior to use for cooking, drinking, or making infant formula.
- LET WATER COOL SUFFICIENTLY BEFORE DRINKING (approximately 110 degrees F).
- Dispose of ice cubes and remake with water that has been boiled.
- Disinfect food contact surfaces (dishes) by immersing them for at least one (1) minute in clean tap water that contains one teaspoon of unscented household bleach per gallon of water.
- Water used for bathing does not need to be boiled.
Continue boiling all water that is to be used for consumption until directed that the boil advisory has been lifted. For more boil advisory updates, please visit our website.
